Sheffield Hallam Universities Drama Department

Performances 7pm – 8:15pm

Wednesday 25th April and Thursday 26th April

Presents

Spring Awakening

Music by Duncan Sheik

Book and lyrics by Steven Sater.

Adolescence is chaotic, messy and filled with hurt.

Spring Awakening is a rock adaptation of the controversial 1892 German play by Frank Wedekind.

Set in late-19th century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality.

The original play was banned in Germany for some time due to its frank portrayal of adolescent sexuality .

In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score.

Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations and won eight.

The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, while its London production won four Olivier Awards.

This production of Spring Awakening will take you back to your adolescence, whether your experiences were similar or dissimilar to the characters in the show. The plot of Spring Awakening revolves around a group of teenagers living in a repressive Victorian culture in Germany.

This production by Sheffield Hallam Drama Department deals honestly with their feelings, desires and dreams, but it also balances equally the consequences of their choices.

The Port of Sheffield represents a new partnership between Sheffield Theatres and The Blue Shed. The Blue Shed has now successfully been awarded funding from the Arts Council for two consultancies to explore the technical issues attached to the production and to extend its connections with artists , designers and communities.

The Port of Sheffield will take place along the length of the Sheffield Canal with audiences travelling via Dutch Barges through a panoramic scenario which unfolds lives and stories of the city.

Sequential episodic performances will be augmented by GPS technologies to create a mirror which reflects the city’s history. The first event of its kind in the city . This a genuinely exciting opportunity to engage in ground breaking practice. Applicants must be able to evidence a solid background and experience in the field and illustrate at this first stage how they will approach the brief. We really look forward to hearing from you and initiating the potential to work on this project.

For full details of the consultancies – click here to download a PDF

A not to be missed chance to see some of the fastest vehicles and people on earth all in one place.

Learn about how their success has been achieved and the fundamental role design, engineering and manufacturing have played in that success.

You’ll be surprised just how many of these couldn’t have happened without innovation, design, engineering and manufacturing talent and resources based in the Sheffield Region.

This event is specifically designed for young people, their families and teachers to see some of the vehicles first hand, hear from and talk to those involved in their successes including:

VESTAS SAILROCKET (sponsored by Ekspan)
The fastest “boat” on the planet with pilot Paul Larson

MARUSSIA RACING FORMULA 1 SHOWCAR plus Simulater

VULCAN BOMBER
Meet ground and flight crew and hear the story of this legendary bomber

MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH TRIATHLON GB PERFORMANCE TEAM
Lois Rosindale and Gordon Benson

WOMEN’S BOBSLEIGH WORLD CHAMPION
Driver, Nicola Minichiello

See some of the speed and engineering related projects being undertaken by local schools, college and university students.

Also try your hand hand at a range of activities including a 3D Virtual Reality Centre where you can dismantle a virtual jet engine, race in an F1 simulator, scare yourself on the skeleton bobsleigh simulator (as recently seen on BBC Question of Sport) and much more…

A number of leading local engineering and manufacturing businesses are exhibiting at the event and explaining career opportunities within their companies. You can talk to apprentices and graduates, find out what it’s really like to work in the sector, what skills and qualifications you will need and who knows, one day play a part in helping achieve some future world records whatever vehicle.
